Here's where to get one of the best pints in the Northern Quarter

IF you're looking for fresh tank beer in the Northern Quarter, check out Cooper Hall – the underground beer hall on Dale Street.

It's one of only a handful of bars in Manchester that serve fresh, unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell delivered in tanks from the Pilsen brewery in the Czech Republic. And it's one reason why this huge, subterranean space is packed out at weekends.

After the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the UK has the highest number of tank beer pubs in Europe.

Part of the attraction of fresh Pilsner Urquell is the visual appeal of the gleaming copper tanks, which flow directly to the taps. But its popularity is mainly down to the superior taste.

The flavour balances sweetness from the triple-decocted malt with bitterness from Saaz hops. Pints are pulled in a single pour that creates a thick head of dense foam which adds smoothness and seals in the flavour and aroma.

This bitter-sweet taste is becoming more and more fashionable in the UK. After the Czech Republic and Slovakia, we have the highest number of tank beer pubs in Europe.

At Cooper Hall they display how many days the tanks have been open so you know you're getting a fresh pint. The Pilsner Urquell is served alongside a simple menu of pretzels and hot dogs. And if you go on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, there'll be live music too.
