Fabulous food and comfortable rooms in a beautiful and romantic setting

WELCOME to The Fenwick – your romantic weekend getaway, a dinner destination or even a quick stop-off en route to the Lake District. Benefitting from a beautiful position in the idyllic Lune Valley, you’ll find the historic country pub between the city of Lancaster and the market town of Kirby Lonsdale. With nine fully refurbished rooms, including some set aside for dog owners, The Fenwick is a great go-to for chilling out and has some fabulous food to boot, sourcing the best seasonal and regional produce from local farmers and fishermen.

Think 28-day dry-aged Lancashire beef (beef also features on the choices of Sunday roast) and game when it’s open season, plus fowl from Goosnargh in the Ribble Valley down near Preston – roast Goosnargh duck served with duck fritters, girolle mushrooms and a sweet potato and orange puree is a house special.

Satisfyingly rich dishes and pub classics are just the ticket after a day out walking, fishing, shooting or site-seeing – there’s a choice of pies, including chicken and ham pot pie with a puff pastry lid or fish pie topped with mash, or firm favourites, like battered haddock and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce.

Seafood is something of a speciality – it’s in the pub’s name, after all, and pub owners the Seafood Pub Company’s founder Joycelyn Neve’s father Chris is a renowned fish merchant, with the family’s seafaring and fishing heritage going back to the 18th century. The chefs make the most of whatever fish has just been landed on the nearby Fylde coast – catch of the day could be lemon sole, skate, turbot, seabass, mackerel or scallops. Think light and fresh seafood dishes including oysters and moules marinieres, devilled crab, and salmon and shrimp pate, and Morecambe Bay plaice, served with seasonal asparagus, pink fir potatoes and lemon butter sauce.

Using locally produced and sourced food but influenced by world cuisine and global flavours, the menu also includes the likes of Goan-inspired fish curry and jerk-spiced Goosnargh chicken with prawn jambalaya and mango and jalapeno salsa – so you should find something, whatever you fancy.

Breakfast is a biggie if you’re stopping in one of the nine guest rooms or even stopping off on your way up to the Lakes or Scotland. There’s porridge with mixed berries and wild flower honey, three-egg omelette with cheese and herbs, or wild mushrooms on toasted brioche with poached eggs to start the day the vegetarian way, or there’s Chris Neve’s own smoked salmon scrambled with eggs and served on toasted English muffins if fish is your thing. Meat-wise, a 5oz grass-fed rump steak with poached eggs and grilled tomatoes, might tempt you, or the full Lancashire breakfast, with smoked back bacon, free range pork sausage, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, The Fenwick’s homemade hash brown, black pudding and baked beans. That should give you enough fuel for the journey ahead.

Food is served every day from noon, until 10pm on Friday and Saturday, and until 9pm Sunday to Thursday, with breakfast served from 7.30-9.30am Monday to Friday and 8am-10am Saturday and Sunday.
