Matchy-matchy is the latest fashion, so here are Bock’s continental combos

BELGIAN-THEMED bar Bock Bière Café has branched out into food, great for sharing over a pint – or just for pairing with a pint. The meat and cheese boards are priced for two or four people, as are the fondues (choose from cheese, with either meat or vegetarian-friendly dips, or chocolate).

Don’t care to share? Try one of the Bock baguettes, which come complete with frites, or the All Day Lunch options, which include soups, salads, stews and speciality croques.

And as matchy-matchy is the trend du jour for the fashionista about town, why wouldn’t foodies want a piece of the action, matching dishes and drinks? Here are some suggestions from the Bock Bière bar manager…

For meat-eaters, the steak on the Tradicional Carne sharing board is complimented by the sharp, tart taste of any of the Flemish beers stocked by the bar, while a Pilsner-style Vedette Extra Blonde is suggested as a palate-cleanser for the Olandese’s Frikandel sausage and Camembert cheese.

The Antipasto sharing board – all salty prosciutto crudo, Parmigiano cheese chunks, sun-dried tomatoes, Mediterranean olives and herb focaccia – teams well with a deep-flavoured bottle of Westmalle Trappist. This dark, malty, chocolatey beer is also a good match for the hearty Bock Prime Stew, full of beans (and pork, bacon and beef).

Talking of chocolate, desserts are firmly in the sweet treat corner, running the gamut of waffles, doughnuts and Spanish-influenced churros. Whether you’ll have room after all that beer is another thing…
