From Heaton Park to Heaton Norris - here's five to enjoy this weekend

The country's annual commemoration of the failure of a plot to blow up parliament and the King is upon us, with tonnes of wood (and hedgehogs, naw) set to be torched across the city this 5 November.

While this year has seen some surprise cancellations - including Chorlton’s Horse & Jockey and the Trafford Centre - there are still plenty of bonnies going off across the city.

Here's five of them...

HEATON PARK | Prestwich | Free

Manchester’s most famous firecracker bursts back onto the scene with its winning mix of funfair rides and spectacular firework displays - joining its Platt Fields and Wythenshawe cousins as the city council’s most popular Bonfire Night celebrations.

BUILE HILL PARK | Salford | Free

There are no less than three events at Buile Hill this year. The fun begins on Friday 3 November at Prince’s park in Irlam with a funfair, bonfire and fireworks - followed by the main event, two days later, where up to 12,000 people are expected to watch the display. Have littluns? 2017 also sees the first ‘Little Sparks in the Park’ for families with children under seven years old.

BURY FOOTBALL CLUB | Bury | From £3.25

Apparently, the aim of this year’s Gigg Lane shindig is to better last year’s event - which, those that went along in 2016, will tell you was already pretty decent. In other words, expect a sparkling, popping, snapping, fizzpopping, whizzpopping display of great proportions.

HEATON NORRIS RECREATION GROUND | Stockport | £5.90

Ask anyone in Stockport where the best fireworks around are and supposedly they’ll say ‘the rec’. That’s because the Bridgeway Church and local charity partners have hosted Light in the Night for the past decade and even the Mayor’s a fan. What’s more, all dosh raised goes to local causes - can’t say fairer than that.

HAIGH HALL COUNTRY PARK | Wigan | From £7 (under fours free)

Like some live music with all your traditional bonfire ingredients? Then head to Haigh Hall, where there’ll be performances by local band Boomin’ plus DJ and singer James Norton. The evening finishes with a dazzling fireworks finale from national champs SM ART Pyro.
