Red & Blue Restaurants to open fourth food gaff in October

Cheese & Co is no more and Rocket & Ruby are straining at the leash to take over the now doubled in size Castle Street space. Forgive the poochie puns but Rocket & Ruby is named after the owner's dogs.

Rocket & Ruby is the latest instalment from Red & Blue Restaurants who already run Salt House Tapas, Hanover Street Social and Bacaro - which is also on Castle Street. It looks like they’re playing restaurant Monopoly – one more opening on this street that’s already choc-a-bloc with food offerings and they’ll be able to build a hotel on it.

Rocket & Ruby completes our original business plan of opening four different, independently-named restaurants in Liverpool

Co-owner Paddy Smith explained their empire-building: ‘Rocket & Ruby completes our original business plan of opening four different, independently-named restaurants in Liverpool, and we remain extremely proud of the high-quality standards we maintain across our portfolio. We are now looking to expand our popular Bacaro restaurant by opening a new site in Manchester in the new year.’

It’s always good to see a local independent do well so good luck to ‘em although the success of their other outposts suggests they don’t need our blessing.

They’re sticking with what works for them – small plates mostly - but Rocket & Ruby will have more of a café vibe. They’ll open early doors for breakfasts so you can go and get your Instagrammable turmeric and beetroot lattes, poached eggs, avocado and spinach and the like.

Rocket & Ruby will then be serving up sandwiches, home-baked goodies and also small plates until late. Think Thai baby aubergines, grilled octopus and braised lamb shoulder – a global hotch-potch of tasty-sounding bits and bobs, rather than the Spanish or Italian focus at Salt House Tapas or Bacaro.

In the meantime, you won’t starve on Castle Street until Rocket & Ruby comes along but it might just offer a laid-back place to do breakfast, lunch and dinner when it does. Or even just a flat white from the coffee window as you're walking past.
