Situated on the corner of Myrtle Street and Hope Street, The Refinery restaurant is unmissable. Taking up almost the entire ground floor of the Josephine Butler building, they serve up a huge range of food and drink including a staple directory of all the British classics alongside a few intriguing influences from afar.  Tempted? Here’s 5 good reasons you should give it a try this month.

1.  A crowd-pleasing menu

The main menu offers a full range of British pub-classics in a much more ‘refined’ setting.  In you’re in the mood for something familiar there’s all the usual suspects including fish and chips, burgers, pasta and steaks alongside as a few dishes influenced from further afield.  Crispy chilli chicken comes with stir fried vegetables and toasted sesame seeds, Teriyaki salmon fillet comes with a sweet Apricot jam and the chargrilled cauliflower comes drizzled in an Argentinian- style Chimichurri dressing. There’s something to please everyone even if you find yourself with the fussiest of guests.

2. You’ll feel right at home

It’s no easy feat to make a big space cosy but The Refinery have somehow managed it.  The rustic interiors combine stripped wood, vintage lampshades and worn leather to create a cool and classy space making it suitable for any occasion whether that’s a special, candle-lit Birthday meal to a relaxed day-time work space. They specialise in live-music but where that hasn’t been possible their playlist will more than make up for it, leaving you tapping your feet as you tuck into dinner.

3.  Set-menu savings

The Refinery has an impressive range of set menus suited to fit whatever the time of day you happen to arrive and they’re all pitched at a very enticing price tag. There’s the main menu that runs 12-8pm where you can grab a three course meal for just £16.95. There’s the pre-theatre menu that comes at less than 20 quid a head and includes two courses and afullbottle of wine. Visit in the morning and there is a full breakfast menu running until lunchtime, or come on a Sunday and take advantage of their incredible, towering roasts on the Sunday menu.

4. Location, Location, Location.

Sometimes not being hidden doesn’t mean you aren’t a gem. The unmissable location of The Refinery on the main road makes the ideal meeting point whether you’re from the city or not. It’s only a hop, skip and a jump away from the Philharmonic Hall and The Everyman so is the perfect place to fill up before a show and if you want to carry on your night it’s only a short stumble to the surrounding bars and pubs. Don’t fancy that? They’ve got a full bar themselves so there’s really no reason to leave at all.

5. Social-Distancing Safe

Not only does having such a great location make The Refinery perfect for gatherings it’s also blessed with a whole lot of space. The indoor area is ideal for big groups (those who have ever had to plan a Christmas party for 30 staff will appreciate this) and there is now a new outdoor space if you don’t mind grabbing a drink in the ‘fresh’ air. Not only is the space good for guests but it makes The Refinery ideal for keeping safe in these strange, Covid times. There are ample walkways between tables, one way arrows and big gaps which means your chances of coming into contact with other guests is kept to a minimum. If you’re looking for safety and comfort they’ve got it covered.
