Athlete Diane Modahl has some sound advice for those taking part this weekend

MANCHESTER-born athlete Diane Modahl, 800m gold medal winner at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, this week shared her top tips for getting in shape before a big event. The runner, who now heads up the Diane Modahl Sports Foundation (DMSF), says nutrition and overall wellbeing are just as important as training hours.

“I know hundreds of people will be gearing up for the Great Manchester Run this weekend, and for some it might feel like a real challenge. What you eat and drink in the few days before the event can really affect your performance, so consider cutting out alcohol, caffeine, and processed foods to give yourself the best possible chance.

“I think it is also important to remember that whilst it can seem crucial to push yourself hard and beat your personal best – just taking part in the run at all is a huge achievement and you should try to enjoy yourself as much as you can.”

The DMSF works with young people across the North West, using the power and discipline of sport to improve self-esteem and general life-skills. The organisation provides coaches, mentors and training programmes in sport, education, and business.

Diane will be appearing this year at Manchester Eats festival, a brand-new food festival taking place in Heaton Park on 7-8 July. The DMSF is the festival’s official charity partner this year.

The Great Manchester Run takes place this Sunday (20 May) with participants running either a 10km or a half-marathon.
